JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Speaker of the Senate and former Prime Minister of Cambodia, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen will be in Indonesia until May 7, 2025.

Hun Sen himself has met President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, Monday (5/5/2025). The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that one of the topics of discussions was transnational online fraud crime.

“Especially related to online scam networks (online fraud/online gambling) and drug abuse, the two countries agreed to strengthen cooperation between law enforcement agencies to address transnational crimes both within bilateral and ASEAN  regional frameworks,” wrote the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Apart from Prabowo, Hun Sen also plans to meet with House  Speaker Puan Maharani, Senate  Speaker Sultan Bachtiar Najamudin, and the ASEAN Secretary General.

In addition to holding several meetings, Hun Sen’s visit to Indonesia was also at the invitation of the ASEAN Secretariat and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA). “To be a guest speaker in a discussion forum on conflict resolution in the region,” he said.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Cambodia were officially established on February 13, 1959, marked by the signing of the Friendship Agreement in Jakarta.

Indonesia has committed to supporting the development of Cambodia’s military capacity through training and exchange of military personnel visits and has provided US$500,000 in weapons and ammunition grants in 2024.

In addition, Indonesia and Cambodia have simultaneously carried out economic cooperation over the last 5 years and an agreement to encourage the expansion of access to pharmaceutical, food and beverage and automotive products.

“The two countries agreed to increase food security by strengthening the food supply chain by encouraging investment in agricultural infrastructure such as rice milling and warehousing,” wrote the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Hun Sen is an important and influential figure in Cambodia  with more than 34 years as Prime Minister. Hun Sen also leads the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), which controls 55 of the 62 seats in the country’s Senate. In his capacity as Senate Speaker, Hun Sen also serves as Acting Head of State when the King of Cambodia is abroad.
