“1 Kakak 7 Ponakan” is now available for streaming on N*****x, following its theatrical release on January 23, 2025. The drama is a remake of a popular soap opera of the same name, originally penned by widely-loved writer Arswendo Atmowiloto and released back in 1996—almost three decades ago.
Director Yandy Laurens
Directed by the experienced Yandy Laurens, known for his work on the hit film “Keluarga Cemara” (2019), which attracted over 1.7 million viewers, this latest offering from Indonesia promises to deliver a compelling story.
Produced by Mandela Pictures in collaboration with Cerita Films, “1 Kakak 7 Ponakan” had its world premiere at the 19th Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival on December 7, 2024 where it received high praise.

Synopsis of “1 Kakak 7 Ponakan”
The film follows Moko (played by Chicco Kurniawan), an architecture student at a prestigious university, guess we’re in the middle class, as he faces the harsh realities of life after graduation. Known for his exemplary character, love clean moral characters, Moko dreams of becoming a successful architect. Don’t we all? However, he finds himself thrust into the role of family breadwinner, responsible for supporting his family and seven nieces and nephews.
Tragedy Strikes
Living with his sister Agnes (played by Maudy Koesnaedi) and her husband Atmo (played by Kiki Narendra), Moko juggles his responsibilities while also caring for his sister’s three children and one niece. Just as he prepares for graduation, tragedy strikes when both his sister and brother-in-law pass away, leaving Moko to care for his orphaned nieces and nephews. Dark slapstick, maybe? Not that this never happens, yo.
So Much to Balance
As he navigates his grief, Moko’s life becomes increasingly complicated. His responsibilities at home lead to conflicts with his girlfriend Maurin (played by Amanda Rawles), straining their relationship. Caught in a dilemma between love, career aspirations, and the needs of his family, Moko must find a way to balance it all, which is probably relatable as most people have a lot going on these days, yeah?
