Arrest of Alleged Threat Maker on TikTok, Election Candidate Anies Reacts

Presidential election candidate Mr. Anies Baswedan expressed appreciation for the arrest of the man who allegedly threatened to shoot him on the social media platform TikTok.

According to Mr. Anies, freedom of speech is good, but it should not be overshadowed by threats (of violence). The former Jakarta Governor also expressed appreciation for the quick action of the national police in uncovering and arresting the alleged perpetrator.

“I really appreciate the Indonesian National Police Chief and Indonesian National Police Headquarters who acted quickly and thoroughly down to lower level officers,” said Mr. Anies, arriving at Radin Intan II Airport, Lampung, on Sunday (14/1/2024) morning.

Social Media Threats of Shooting Against Presidential Election Candidate Anies Baswedan, Rival Candidate Ganjar Pranowo Comments, Police Investigate

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Presidential election candidate and former Jakarta Governor Mr. Anies Baswedan has received threats on social media he would be shot.

The threats were revealed through tweets on the social media platform X from an account called @sleepyiysloth which uploaded a screenshot of comments on the social media platform TikTok that contained the threats.

The comment written by @Rifanariansyah read, “Excuse me, sir, what is the punishment for shooting Anies in the head?” The legal team from the Anies-Muhaimin election campaign team have reported the relevant accounts and comments to the police.

The campaign team hopes the police can investigate the threatening murder threat that is related to the 2024 presidential election. “The campaign legal team has followed up on the murder threat because it obviously endangers the safety of Mr. Anies Rasyid Baswedan, and is a very dangerous act with the 2024 election contest underway,” said the national campaign team spokesperson, Mr. Iwan Tarigan, Friday (12/1/2024).

Ganjar also comments

The presidential candidate endorsed by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) Mr. Ganjar Pranowo also commented on the threat. He regretted the threat to shoot Mr. Anies.

According to Mr. Ganjar, the threat does not represent democracy in Indonesia at all, especially with the 2024 elections to held soon. “Yes, if we already have democracy, don’t make threats like that. Let the people make their choice without interference,” said Ganjar, when Kompas spoke with him at Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School in the East Java regional city of Jombang.

Ganjar touched on democracy in Indonesia which everyone should work to maintain together. If the shooting threat was linked to someone not liking Mr. Anies’ attitude in the third presidential election debate, Mr. Ganjar could not justify this at all.

“The debate is actually so people can be sure of their voting preferences. So people are asked or candidates are asked to show their ideas. Others dispute this, but this is actually just a normal process,” said the former Governor of Central Java province.

Mr. Ganjar then mentioned that negative campaigning is better than black campaigns. According to Mr. Ganjar, it is better for parties who don’t like it to attack through negative campaigns without personal attacks. “There should be no black campaigns, but negative campaigns is permissible. Please make it positive. That is the debate process,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, National Police Headquarters (Mabes) has not received any reports regarding threats to shoot Mr. Anies made on social media. Police public relations spokesperson Brigadier General (Pol.) Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko said that although there had been no report, the police had carried out an in-depth investigation into the account that was spreading threats. “So far there has been no official complaint, but the police have carried out an in-depth investigation into the account,” he said at National Police Headquarters in Jakarta.

At the same time, Brig. Gen. (Pol.) Trunoyudo invited the public to keep the peace during the 2024 elections. The aim is for the 2024 elections to run safely and peacefully. “So the National Police also appeals to the entire community, make sure we conduct safe and peaceful elections so we maintain the unity and integrity of the nation,” he stressed.
