Adviser to Minister for State Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir On Appointment of PSI Founder to MIND ID Board of Commissioners

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta — Special Adviser to the Minister for State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir, Arya Sinulingga, openly disclosed the rationale behind the appointment of Ms. Grace Natalie, Deputy Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), as a commissioner of the mining company MIND ID, the state-owned holding company for Indonesia’s publicly owned mining companies.
According to Arya, Grace’s appointment was thought appropriate because managing a mining company requires someone who is supported by the media. “Our mining companies under MIND ID need someone who understands, who is supported by the media,” Arya said at the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises on Wednesday, June 12, 2024.
Arya also asserted that the appointment of commissioners by the Ministry follows established procedures and takes into considerations individual competencies. “These appointments undergo proper testing, aElections: China Downstream, The Tentacles of Indonesia’s Nickel Oligarchy By Project Multatuli, Part 3 – Stories From Indonesialign with needs, and involve a variety of backgrounds. So, everything is in order,” he explained.
He further illustrated the need for media support by citing several current mining-related legal cases. For instance, the tin mining case involving Mr. Harvey Moeis, currently under investigation by the Attorney General’s Office, and problems related to PT Antam Tbk. “Cases like the tin mining case, the PT Antam case, and others, really need this,” Arya remarked.
Arya referenced the case involving PT Antam and Budi Said, a wealthy businessman from Surabaya which relates to Budi Said’s gold purchase in 2018, which later became the subject of legal proceedings. Recently, Budi won his appeal in the Supreme Court.
Based on court judgement No. 1666 K/Pdt/2022, PT Antam is required to pay 1,136 kilograms or 1.1 tons of gold to Budi. PT Antam also has to pay the sum of IDR 92,092,000,000 ($6.1m). Given cases like these, Arya argued strongly that they require a person with knowledge of the media.
“Take the PT Antam case, for example. They were late and ended up losing to that crazy rich person from Surabaya,” he said.
In the case, according to Arya, various public opinions had been shaped, ultimately leading to PT Antam’s loss and a subsequent review. “The approach has to be media oriented.”
Grace Natalie, the Deputy Chairperson of PSI’s Board of Trustees, came into the spotlight after her appointment as commissioner of Mining Industry Indonesia, or MIND ID. She was appointed as commissioner during the company’s annual general meeting of shareholders on Monday, June 10.
Before entering politics, Grace Natalie Louisa worked as a journalist at several television stations. Her career began at television networks SCTV, Antv, and TVOne. In the 2024 elections, PSI supported Prabowo Subianto and his running mate, and President Joko Widodo’s son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka.

About MIND ID
MIND ID is the Indonesian publicly owned mining industry umbrella holding company comprising PT Antam Tbk, PT Bukit Asam Tbk, PT Freeport Indonesia, PT INALUM, and PT Timah Tbk.
According to its website, Mining Industry Holding was officially established in 2017 using PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Persero) or INALUM as the parent company. INALUM holds majority shares in three of Indonesia’s largest mining companies: PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, PT Bukit Asam Tbk, and PT Timah Tbk.
Since 2019, Mining Industry Holding has transformed into MIND ID (Mining Industry Indonesia) to differentiate PT INALUM’s role as an aluminum smelting operation from its role as a holding company.
Strategic holding company
Currently, MIND ID operates under a new entity name, PT Mineral Industri Indonesia (Persero), which includes PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, PT Bukit Asam Tbk, PT Freeport Indonesia, PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium, and PT Timah Tbk. PT INALUM is now on par with other MIND ID members, allowing MIND ID to focus more on being a strategic holding company, while INALUM focuses on developing national aluminum down streaming.
According to state news agency Antara, alongside Grace Natalie, MIND ID also appointed Fuad Bawazier as the Chief Commissioner at its AGM for the Fiscal Year 2023.

The new board of commissioners consists of Fuad Bawazier as Chief Commissioner; Muhammad Munir and Pamitra Wineka as Independent Commissioners; and three other commissioners: Astera Primanto Bhakti, Grace Natalie, and Nicolaus Teguh Budi Harjanto.

The board of directors includes President Director Hendi Prio Santoso, Deputy President Director Dany Amrul Ichdan, Portfolio and Business Development Director Dilo Seno Widagdo, Finance Director Akhmad Fazri, and Risk Management and HSSE Director Nur Hidayat Udin.

Who is Grace Natalie?
Grace Natalie Louisa was born on July 4, 1982. She is the daughter of Brata Ngadiman and Anna Clementine and married to Kevin Osmondo in 2011.
Grace completed her high school education at SMA 3 BPK Penabur and earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the Kwik Kian Gie School of Business and Informatics (IBII). Before venturing into politics, Grace was known as a journalist and news anchor for television channels SCTV, ANTV, and TVOne.
At TVOne, she was a familiar face on news programs like “Kabar Pasar,” “Kabar Petang,” “Apa Kabar Indonesia,” and “Kabar Terkini.” Grace’s entry into journalism began with the “SCTV Goes to Campus” quiz show, a platform for aspiring television hosts.
Career in TV News
According to Tempo magazine, Grace won the competition and advanced to the national level, where she placed in the top five. This achievement launched her career in Indonesian television news.
After being hired as a news anchor at major Indonesian television station SCTV in 2004, Grace moved to competitor ANTV in 2006. During this period, she attended a course at the Maastricht School of Management in the Netherlands from January to April 2009.

As a journalist, Grace conducted exclusive interviews with notable figures such as Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, East Timorese President Jose Ramos-Horta, and Forbes Magazine CEO Steve Forbes.
In 2012, Grace left journalism to become the CEO of polling and research organization Saiful Mujani Research and Consulting. Two years later, she entered politics by founding the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), now headed by President Joko Widodo’s youngest son Kaesang Pangarep, after the 2014 general election.
